Two Drivers Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 53 Near Minong, Wisconsin, Authorities Identify Victims

MINONG, Wis. — Authorities have identified the two drivers who lost their lives in a devastating wrong-way collision on U.S. Highway 53 just north of Minong, Wisconsin, on Wednesday evening, November 4, 2026.

The victims were identified by the Wisconsin State Patrol as 47-year-old Nicholas Groszbach of Hibbing and 80-year-old James Paske of Minong. Both men died following a head-on collision involving two vehicles, leaving their communities facing the heartbreaking loss.

According to authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday when a vehicle traveling southbound entered the northbound lanes of Highway 53 and collided with another vehicle traveling northbound.

The impact proved fatal for both drivers. Officials confirmed that neither vehicle had any passengers, and no other individuals were reported to have been involved in the collision.

Authorities Confirm the Victims’ Identities

In an update released Thursday afternoon, the Wisconsin State Patrol confirmed the identities of the two men killed in the crash.

Nicholas Groszbach, 47, was from Hibbing, while James Paske, 80, was a resident of Minong. Authorities have not publicly confirmed which of the two men was driving the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision as they work to establish a clearer understanding of what happened in the moments leading up to the fatal impact.

At this time, officials have not released additional details explaining why one vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. The cause of the wrong-way driving has not been established in the information released by authorities.

Crash Forces Highway 53 Closure

The deadly collision prompted a significant emergency response and temporarily disrupted traffic along Highway 53.

Following the crash, the northbound lanes remained closed for several hours while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. The closure allowed authorities to examine the vehicles, document evidence, and investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Drivers traveling through the area were affected as officials worked to ensure the scene could be investigated safely.

The Wisconsin State Patrol later confirmed that the affected northbound lanes had reopened after the investigation at the scene progressed.

Although traffic has resumed, the investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing.

Investigation Continues

Wrong-way collisions can be particularly dangerous because vehicles traveling in opposite directions may collide head-on, leaving drivers with very little time to react or avoid impact. The severity of such crashes can be influenced by vehicle speeds, road conditions, and other circumstances that investigators must carefully evaluate.

However, officials have not yet provided enough information to determine what factors contributed to Wednesday evening’s collision near Minong.

The Wisconsin State Patrol has not announced a final determination regarding the cause of the crash, and the available information does not establish why the vehicle entered the northbound lanes.

Authorities are expected to continue reviewing the evidence gathered during the investigation. Further details may become available as officials work to determine the sequence of events that led to the deaths of both drivers.

A Tragic Loss for Two Communities

The deaths of Nicholas Groszbach and James Paske mark a tragic outcome to an incident that unfolded on Highway 53 on Wednesday evening.

Groszbach, 47, was from Hibbing, while Paske, 80, lived in Minong. Their deaths have brought attention to the devastating consequences of wrong-way crashes and the importance of road safety.

As the investigation continues, additional information about the circumstances surrounding the collision may help clarify how the tragedy occurred.

For now, authorities have confirmed that both drivers died at the scene of the incident, no passengers were present in either vehicle, and no other individuals were reported to have been involved.

The northbound lanes of Highway 53 have since reopened, but the investigation remains active.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as additional information is released by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
