BLANCHISSEUSE, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO — What was supposed to be an enjoyable weekend hiking adventure ended in heartbreaking tragedy after a 22-year-old man who disappeared while attempting to cross a river at Marianne Gorge was found dead following an extensive search operation.
The young man, identified as Donald Francis of Tacarigua, had been missing since Sunday, November 1, after entering the water at approximately 3:30 p.m. during a hiking trip with four other companions.
His disappearance prompted an urgent search involving police officers, Fire Service personnel, and members of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team.
Sadly, the operation ended with the discovery and recovery of Francis’ body, bringing an end to the search but leaving his family, friends, and loved ones facing an unimaginable loss.
Young Hiker Disappears While Crossing the River
According to information surrounding the incident, Francis was hiking with a group of four other people at Marianne Gorge in Blanchisseuse when the unfortunate incident occurred.
At some point during the outing, the 22-year-old reportedly entered the water at around 3:30 p.m. in an attempt to swim across the gorge and join the other members of his hiking party who were waiting on the opposite bank.
However, what appeared to be a routine river crossing quickly turned into a frightening emergency.
Francis never made it to the other side.
When his companions realized that he had disappeared beneath the water and could no longer locate him, they immediately began searching the surrounding area.
Despite their efforts, they were unable to find him.

The Hunters Search and Rescue Team, led by Commander Shamsudeen Ayube, also joined the efforts to locate the missing 22-year-old.
Searchers worked in the surrounding area, attempting to establish where Francis might have disappeared and determine the best way to search the gorge.
However, despite the initial efforts, the young man was not immediately located.
The operation was subsequently suspended overnight before resuming on Monday morning.
Fire Service Officers Join the Search
As the search continued on Monday, Fire Service personnel joined police officers and members of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team.
The combined operation focused on locating Francis in the gorge and recovering him from the water.
After continued search efforts, Fire Service officers eventually located his body and successfully retrieved it from the gorge.
The discovery brought a tragic conclusion to the search that had begun the previous afternoon.
